Band 5 Revisited (2)

Yesterday I characterised Band 5 (Level 1) as the transcendent descent, whereby refined holistic intuition - associated with the “higher” dimensions of spiritual development - becomes grounded in the linear understanding of the middle band.

So it represents a certain integration of both conscious and unconscious, whereby contemplative type vision can be successfully balanced with analytic type reason.

And this descent of the “higher” superior is only made possible through substantial further exposure to the fantasies and exposures emitted from the depths of the “lower” inferior self.
At this stage one becomes keenly aware that such notions of “higher” and “lower” have a purely relative validity. Indeed formerly, undue identification with development of the “higher” inevitably led to a certain repression of the “lower” self, whereby it was unable to properly speak for itself in recognising its most primitive instinctive desires.

However as one gradually learns to relinquish the super-ego control of the “higher” self, hidden fantasies can be more freely emitted from the lowest depths of the subconscious mind. And as one learns to accept such fantasies without rational censorship, their involuntary nature is gradually eroded.
Then when fully accepted, their involuntary nature ceases entirely so that instinctive material is no longer forcibly projected into consciousness but now spontaneously cooperates in a free manner with sense phenomena.

Indeed as I have recently emphasised on my companion “Integral Science” blog, there is a marked complementary connection here with the physical phenomenon of Hawking Radiation.

Now, such physical radiation is emitted from the event horizons of black holes very slowly at first. However as the black hole loses mass due to the emission of this energy, the rate of emission itself increases until the black hole finally evaporates altogether.

It is somewhat similar in psycho spiritual terms. Due to ingrained repression, the rate at which primitive phenomena can be projected into conscious experience is initially very slow. However as the repressive layer is gradually lifted, projections can now be more freely emitted. And this process continues until all the material submerged in the dark subconscious depths is released. And at this stage, one can then finally emerge in full freedom into the conscious light.

So Band 5 (Level 2) is characterised by the immanent descent to the bottom of the subconscious regions in the drive to uncover repressed instinctive material lying in its hidden depths at greatest remove from conscious control.

And this uncovering takes place through an intense form of projection, where hidden fantasies - especially of an erotic nature - are emitted into consciousness. And when one freely accepts the message conveyed regarding our most intimate physical desires, their involuntary nature ceases.

Therefore the psychological journey has a two-fold purpose. From one perspective there is the transcendent aspect of discovering one’s hidden spiritual nature (as beyond all phenomena); however equally there is the immanent aspect of discovering one’s hidden physical nature (as prior to all phenomena).

And because so many false messages are unconsciously transmitted to the newly formed foetus (even before birth actually takes place), it can prove an extraordinarily difficult task later in life to rewrite this earliest unconscious script, that prevents acceptance, in so many ways, of one’s physical self.

And because spiritual and physical aspects are complementary, one cannot achieve one’s full spiritual potential without corresponding full acceptance of the physical self.

As I have recounted in detail especially in the “Riemann Hypothesis” blog Band 5 (Level 2)  my personal development was associated with a remarkable mathematical odyssey, where the hidden holistic nature of the natural number system (through the primes) gradually was made apparent.

And far from this relating merely to mathematical type reality, I discovered - that when correctly appreciated - it was intimately related likewise with the on-going psychological development of this level i.e. Band 5 (Level 2).

The primes are long recognised as the independent “building blocks” of the natural number system. So every natural number is either a prime or composed of a unique composition of prime factors. So 6 as a composite number, for example (i.e. 2 * 3), is uniquely composed of two primes.

However what is not all clearly appreciated is that the primes likewise have an important holistic basis through this property that enables them to be seamlessly related (through multiplication) with the natural number system.

And this holistic quality of interdependence (with the natural numbers) can be indirectly expressed in a quantitative manner through the solutions to an infinite set of equations known as the Riemann zeta zeros.

The Riemann Hypothesis - which remains the greatest unsolved problem in mathematics - postulates that all these zeros lie on an imaginary straight line (through .5).

Now what I gradually came to realise is that when expressed in more psychological terms, the Riemann Hypothesis represents the unconscious basis of the consciously understood number line and by extension the unconscious basis of all linear type understanding.

In psychological terms, the task in development (Band 5, Level 2) finally is to fully unravel the nature of primitive instinctive behaviour.

And this, as we have seen is only achieved when the involuntary nature of primitive projections is removed.

In other words when its involuntary nature ceases one can seamlessly combine primitive instinctive behaviour with conscious type understanding (i.e. of a linear concrete nature).

So for such primitive to be consistent with conscious type behaviour it must likewise be linear in an imaginary manner, which is just another way of expressing the qualitative basis of conscious linear type understanding.

Expressing it briefly, the task of truly understanding the Riemann Hypothesis in an integrated mathematical fashion (containing both analytic and holistic aspects) is inseparable from the corresponding task of fully integrating the unconscious primitive with the conscious aspect of understanding.

Thus to conclude, Band 5 (Level 2) is associated with the final immanent descent in the journey to fully unravel the true unconscious nature of physical instinctive behaviour.

Dark Night of the Soul (7)

We return here to providing a holistic mathematical perspective on the "dark night" stage. As we have seen the first level of the 3rd band (of which the "dark night" is the final and most important stage) is defined in terms of 2-dimensional interpretation. Thus starting with the dualistic phenomenal distinctions (that characterise the 1st dimension) one then attempts to approximate as close as possible growing nondual spiritual awareness through a process of dynamic negation of attachment to all conscious symbols. So this dynamic negation of conscious phenomena constitutes the 2nd of these two dimensions. So we posit conscious phenomena in a linear dualistic manner (+ 1). We then unconsciously negate such phenomena in a circular nondual manner (  – 1). Such positing and negating in experience leads to an ever increasing dynamic interaction as between the external (objective) and internal (subjective) aspects of experience. In this way, ever more refined d

4-Dimensional Reality

In holistic mathematical terms, the structures of Level 2 (Band 3) can be characterized as of a 4-dimensional nature from a qualitative perspective. Now we all accept in conventional scientific terms the quantitative importance of 4 dimensions (with our macro world seemingly structured in this manner). However an equal (though largely unrecognised) importance attaches to 4 dimensions from a qualitative perspective (with again everyday reality seemingly structured in this fashion). These the 4 qualitative dimensions correspond indirectly (in a reduced quantitative manner) with the four roots of 1 i.e. + 1,  − 1, + i and − i respectively. Now we have already dealt with the significance of the two real (horizontal) roots in the context of 2-dimensional interpretation.  Again, in dynamic relative terms, these refer to the interaction of external (objective) and internal (subjective) polarities (which necessary underlie all experience). As we have seen, these horizontal polarities

Transcendence and Immanence

As we have seen, Level 2 (Band 3) - which I typically refer to as the Point Level - is geared to the unfolding of the imaginary polarities relating to the true relationship (without reductionism) as between whole and part. Once again, it comes in two complementary forms. From the transcendent perspective, the collective whole (as quantitative) uniquely mediates the universal spirit (as qualitative). From the complementary immanent perspective, each individual part (as quantitative) again uniquely mediates the universal spirit (as qualitative). Thus from these two related perspectives, the spirit is mediated both through (collective) whole and (individual) part phenomena. In this way, through both quantitative aspects being related to spirit in a complementary fashion, whole/part reductionism is thereby avoided. Whole/part reductionism - as we have seen - consists of interpreting both wholes and parts with respect merely to their quantitative characteristics (with the whole in a
